چکیده

This review covers starch synthesis in the maize endosperm. Starch comprises one of the major glucose polymers in many living organisms. It is critical for plant life since it provides a mechanism to store the vast amounts of fixed carbon arising from photosynthesis. As the major component of many seeds, starch provides the important source of energy transferred from parent to progeny. Animal life is also dependent on starch since animals (including humans) rely primarily on the starch-rich cereal seeds to provide essential calories and nutrients. Starch is important to agriculture since it is the major component of the maize seed. This selective review (1) provides an overview of the enzymes uniquely important in starch synthesis and the genes that control them, (2) emphasizes unresolved important questions, (3) highlights unexpected conclusions and (4) discusses derived principles that likely are applicable to other studies of important biochemical pathways.

ZmbZIP91 regulates expression of starch synthesis-related genes by binding to ACTCAT elements in their promoters.

Starch synthesis is a key process that influences crop yield and quality, though little is known about the regulation of this complex metabolic pathway. Here, we present the identification of ZmbZIP91 as a candidate regulator of starch synthesis via co-expression analysis in maize (Zea mays L.). ZmbZIP91 was strongly associated with the expression of starch synthesis genes. Reverse tanscription...

ADP-glucose drives starch synthesis in isolated maize endosperm amyloplasts: characterization of starch synthesis and transport properties across the amyloplast envelope.

We recently developed a method of purifying amyloplasts from developing maize (Zea mays L.) endosperm tissue [Neuhaus, Thom, Batz and Scheibe (1993) Biochem. J. 296, 395-401]. In the present paper we analyse how glucose 6-phosphate (Glc6P) and other phosphorylated compounds enter the plastid compartment. Using a proteoliposome system in which the plastid envelope membrane proteins are functiona...

Over‐expression of mutated ZmDA1 or ZmDAR1 gene improves maize kernel yield by enhancing starch synthesis

Grain weight and grain number are important crop yield determinants. DA1 and DAR1 are the ubiquitin receptors that function as the negative regulators of cell proliferation during development in Arabidopsis. An arginine to lysine mutant at amino acid site 358 could lead to the da1-1 phenotype, which results in an increased organ size and larger seeds. In this study, the mutated ZmDA1 (Zmda1) an...

Particle Size Distribution and Viscoelastic Behavior of French Dressing Containing Two Types of Commercial Waxy Maize Starches

Emulsion stability, viscoelastic rheological properties and particle size distribution of French dressing samples formulated with two types of commercial modified starch have been investigated. The product’s usual thickening agents, xanthan and guar gum, were 100% substituted by (2, 2.2%) of acetylated distarch adipate (ADA) and hydroxypropylated distarch phosphate (HDP) from waxy maize starch....

Genome-Wide Association Study Identifies Candidate Genes for Starch Content Regulation in Maize Kernels

Kernel starch content is an important trait in maize (Zea mays L.) as it accounts for 65-75% of the dry kernel weight and positively correlates with seed yield. A number of starch synthesis-related genes have been identified in maize in recent years. However, many loci underlying variation in starch content among maize inbred lines still remain to be identified. The current study is a genome-wi...
